Network Rail Property, Places for London and Lambeth Council will work to bring forward plan
Network Rail Property, Places for London and Lambeth Council have signed a partnership agreement to regenerate Waterloo Station and the South Bank area of South London.
The trio said it will work with stakeholders to bring forward a detailed regeneration masterplan.
It will build on last year’s Waterloo Station vision document, which set out plans for the area.
That document, drawn up by Grimshaw Architects for the council, sets out long-term ambitions to improve the station and the wider area, including more than 40 enhanced pedestrian and cycling routes and the relocation of some bus and taxi stops to a new interchange.
Early proposals would see sweeping public realm enhancements and more than 18,000 sq m of vacant undercrofts beneath the station opened up to provide retail and community spaces.
Images also show a large roof extension on the top of the main early 20th century station building and a new glazed entrance portal on its northern side.
The plans would see the construction of an 11,000 sq m new concourse, 8,800 sq m of new affordable workspace, 30,000 sq m of public realm and green spaces and several large new buildings on four plots and infill sites around the station and the South Bank area.
Other proposals include public realm improvements to the nearby Lambeth North neighbourhood and Lower Marsh, at least 20 new pedestrian routes through the area and 5,100 new cycle spaces around the station.
Robin Dobson, group property director at Network Rail said: “ We will work with neighbouring partners to deliver a regeneration plan that unlocks huge growth and investment opportunities across the borough, delivering the widest mix of uses and something very special for this important part of London for future generations to come.â€
Claire Holland, the leader of Lambeth Council, said: “As a council we are keenly focused on growth opportunities that benefit Lambeth residents. This project significantly supports that aim by creating job opportunities, attracting more businesses to the area and will also see new homes built.â€
London Waterloo Station is the fourth busiest station in Great Britain. Located next to the South Bank neighbourhood, it hosts St Thomas’ Hospital, The Old Vic Theatre, Southbank Centre and BFI Southbank.
Places for London is Transport for London’s wholly-owned property company.
