Security for Bond
NACOSS Gold firm West London Security has designed, installed and maintains an integrated security solution for the head office of Eon Productions, home of the iconic James Bond movies.
WLS was challenged to carry out the installation with minimal disruption to the fixtures and décor. In addition to CCTV and an intruder alarm system, WLS specified access control with a dedicated site code and number range. The office was secured with a Honeywell WIN-PAK Pro proximity access control system, Fusion DVR and Galaxy intruder alarm, which restricts access at the main doors as well as on each of the six floors of the grade-II listed building.
All main doors are kept locked and staff use proximity access control cards to gain entry to authorised areas. CCTV cameras have been positioned to monitor activities around the perimeter of the building and all secured areas. WLS recommended and installed the WIN-PAK Pro server, combined with the Honeywell Fusion DVR, which records all cameras in real-time on the hard drive.
Using a web browser, Eon's John Roebuck can monitor images from the cameras using Fusion software and recordings can be played back within seconds, also via the browser.
The CCTV provides additional security whenever a visitor calls at the main entrance. During or after office working hours, staff can see the visitor using the web browser and activate the door opener to let them in.
Roebuck said: "West London Security provided us with a solution that matched our exact requirements, delivered on time and on budget. We couldn't have asked for anything more."
Eyes on the tots
Microtect Security Ltd has carried out an installation for Applegarth Day Nursery, which was the first in the Nottingham region to have connected its CCTV cameras to the internet, enabling customers to log in via a secure connection.
This means that parents with access to the internet at home, work, abroad or through their mobile phones, will be able to see live video of their children learning and playing at the nursery.
Cameras in each room of the nursery, and the areas for older children, are connected to a video server, which both digitally records and connects to the internet.
With Norbain's advice, 15 Vista fixed internal dome cameras (VFD3V9CW-3A) and three dome cameras (VFD13C) were selected. However, Microtect found that if the cameras were mounted on the ceiling, they would be too far away from children playing on the floor, and parents would see the tops of their heads rather than the expressions on their faces.
To combat this, the cameras were wall-mounted, where possible, about six feet from the floor.
Digital for St David's
CDS Systems has installed and maintains an upgraded CCTV system at St David's Shopping Centre in Cardiff which marks the centre's first venture into digital recording.
The shopping centre, which has more than 60 shops, including Debenhams, Bhs and Marks & Spencer, replaced its analogue VCRs with a digital video recording system from Vigilant Technology, and has reduced crime as a result.
The movements of the 400,000 shoppers who visit the shopping centre each week are now recorded onto the digital system, which provides half frame rate recording at 2CIF resolution on each and every camera, providing virtual real-time playback and 31-day RAID five hard disk storage of video images.
Brian Vaughan, technical services manager at St David's Shopping Centre, says the high quality video images produced by the system have helped police to detect crime. "One of our external cameras captured a very serious assault that left a student in hospital for two months," he said. "The pictures of the attack were so clear and detailed that they convinced the parents of the teenage lad who carried out the attack to hand him in."
Vistec goes back to school
Vistec Systems has installed video surveillance technology from Vicon at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls in Thornton Heath, Surrey, to enable it to monitor the performance of trainee teachers via CCTV cameras.
Patrick Harris, network manager at Norbury manor, says remotely monitored CCTV is less intrusive than the usual methods used to assess the performance of trainee teachers.
Norbury wanted a CCTV system which would not only capture video of a teacher taking a class, but also record audio to allow the college to assess what teachers are saying to their pupils. Vistec Systems chose Vicon's Elite Digital Recording System.
Ron Wakeling, Vistec's business development manager, said: "The Vicon Kollector was the only system we could find that has the ability to lip-synch with perfect accuracy."
The college's observation room is covered by one fixed CCTV camera and three Vicon surveyor VFT cameras with PTZ functions. Video images from the cameras are recorded onto the Vicon Kollector and transmitted over Norbury Manor's LAN for viewing in any room in the college by authorised staff from a PC.
Go Direct to bikes
Direct CCTV has provided an advanced security and entertainment solution for the Airwaves Ducati team competing in this year's British SuperBike Championship.
Direct supplied systems from Dedicated Micros which were placed at the very heart of the solution for the Airwaves Ducati team.
The robust Dennard 2060 outdoor dome was positioned to keep an eye on the pit area with images from this and other cameras streamed back via Mel Secure's wireless connection to a rack-mounted Digital Sprite 2.
CCTV images were then available to view through DM's NetVu ObserVer software, not only to ensure the security of the team's valuable equipment, but also for entertainment purposes.
In this case, a large plasma screen was positioned in the hospitality area for viewers.
Data safe with Encom
Dublin-based Encom has installed and configured network cameras and video servers from Axis Communications at Data Electronics Group, a successful data centre provider serving large enterprises in Ireland.
The products are designed to provide an additional layer of security on the data floors within DEG's headquarters site at Kilcarbery Business Park in Dublin.
The new system consists of 60 Axis 210 network cameras, 32 existing analogue CCTV cameras feeding into two CCTV multiplexers which, in turn, provide data to two Axis 241S video servers.
Milestone XProtect Enterprise software is being used for viewing the images. All data is then stored for 30 days on an Intel-based 9.6Tb server. The network cameras cover all site entrances and provide full coverage across the data centre floors, collecting images at six frames per second on motion.
The new IP surveillance system works in conjunction with already tight physical security. Entry to restricted parts of the building is controlled through the use of a biometric hand key geometry system from IR Recognition systems, which identifies an individual using the unique characteristics of his palm dimensions.
Library items protected
The Spinal Injuries Association's library has been protected by an EAS system from Intrepid Security Solutions.
The library holds hundreds of books, periodicals, dissertations and newsletters of interest to spinal cord injured people as well as consultants, general practitioners, medical students and the families of those affected by the disability.
The tagging system introduced by Intrepid was its 9000H model, which utilises radio frequency technology.
Operating at 8.2MHz, the system is able to work with a variety of hard tags and labels to protect a wide range of items.
Red Alert for outlet
Red Alert Security Technology has upgraded the CCTV system at the Ashford base of McArthurGlen, a leading European designer outlet. Red Alert replaced the existing analogue video recorders with the latest digital recording technology from Vicon.
The 182,000 square feet centre features the world's largest 'tented roof' structure, and has 80 stores, including Gap Outlet, Marks & Spencer Outlet, Oasis and The Designer Room. It attracts more than three million visitors a year.
For five years the centre had used analogue video recorders as part of its CCTV system. Security manager Andy Murray said the management felt that the time was right to invest in the latest digital technology.
"The Vicon digital recorders have allowed us to continuously capture and record images in real time from all of the PTZ Surveyor domes strategically located around the centre. Previously because of the limited storage capacity of video tapes we had to record in time lapse mode. "Red Alert understood the high levels of service that we require and they were able to demonstrate that they have the technical skills to help us get the most out of our CCTV system."
Blue Rocking at Baxters
Blue Rock has installed CCTV through Blue Rock Security Solutions and EAS tagging systems through another subsidiary, Blue Rock Security, at Baxters Food Group's new flagship store at the picturesque town of Tullibardine in Perthshire.
Blue Rock Security Solutions managing director Anthony Penny says: "The EAS tagging systems at Tullibardine were integrated into Norbain's Vista CCTV equipment, so that when an alarm goes off from the EAS system it will position the internal high speed dome cameras to look at the relevant location and also speed up the record rate on the DVR."
Discrete Vista mini domes cover the main and front entrances, the restaurant entrance, the cook shop and the tills. Three Vista VPD-1 series fully-functional Power Domes cover the fashion, gift, cook and food areas, along with the food hall. A Samsung SDN520-P colour/mono camera with a Vista VDD35V814e varifocal lens, installed within a heated Vista housing, is sited at the front exterior of the building.
Bedford plays its Ace
Bedford-based Ace Security has installed a new CCTV wireless surveillance system at a major out-of-town retail centre near its offices.
Bedford Interchange Retail Park had been seeing an increase in cars broken into on the site and police wanted urgent action.
Ace was employed by Bedfordshire Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership to carry out the work. The company installed Mel Secure Systems' wireless camera technology, which operates with video encryption so that the picture cannot be interrogated by anyone else.
"This technology requires a very high degree of experience and technical knowledge to install and fine tune for unique working environments," said Kevin Burraway, managing director of Ace Security. "We are pleased to be working with such an important community project. Ace, which already maintains CCTV surveillance around Bedford town centre for the borough council, was able to link the new camera directly into the council's 24-hour security TV monitoring station."
Intrepid Security Solutions has installed an EAS tagging system at A/X Armani Exchange's first European store at Bluewater Shopping Centre. The AM Loop system, which utilises magnetic tag technology, was supplied, along with a mixture of hard tags and labels. Intrepid will be installing a similar system at the next A/X Armani Exchange store to be opened in Liverpool.
