David Adjaye behind radical refurbishment of Birchfield Estate for Urban Splash and Birmingham City Council

Urban Splash and Birmingham city Council have announced a joint venture to redevelop three tower blocks on a rundown council estate in Birmingham

Recently-honoured architect David Adjaye will draw up plans for a radical refurbishment of 270 flats on the Birchfield Estate in Perry Barr in the north west of the city.

The plans form part of the first phase of a wider regeneration in the Birchfield area.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Council explained why it decided not to demolish the towers.

She said: “The decision to retain these architecturally significant tower blocks, which have unparalleled views across the City, was taken in response to the need for a step change in the supply of new homes. It will provide a catalyst to creating increased confidence in the housing market in the North West of Birmingham.â€

Urban Splash is already working on two schemes in Birmingham, the redevelopments of the Rotunda and Fort Dunlop.
