The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 are expected to come into force on 6 April 2006. The new edict will introduce tougher noise control levels, completely replacing the existing 1989 version of the regulations.

Two ‘action levels' and a ‘limit value' for noise will be introduced. The first ‘action level' will be 80 dB(A), with a peak value of 112 pascals; the second, 85 dB(A) with a peak value of 140 pascals. The limit value will be set at 87 dB(A), representing the maximum noise exposure allowable.

The 2005 Regulations will also include requirements for risk assessment by competent persons (reg 5); elimination or reduction of noise (reg 6); measures to reduce exposure at the upper action values (reg 6); actions and prohibition at exposure limit level (reg 6); provision of personal hearing protectors on request (reg 7); designation of workplace hearing protection zones (reg 7); employers' and employees' duties for use of equipment (reg 8); health surveillance (reg 9); information, instruction and training (reg 10).
