Martin Boyce is the new regional construction manager for Kier Homes Northern
How did you get into construction?
I started as a chain boy for Henry Boot and then moved on to trainee foreman for Fairclough Civil Engineering.
Biggest challenge in your new role?
Managing my own department, including the office and the site staff, plus the 100 tradesmen directly employed by Kier Homes.
The most important factor in providing good site management?
Teamwork, getting it right first time and pride in the standard of workmanship.
What are your professional goals?
To challenge myself and always strive to be the best.
Biggest professional achievement?
I have four NHBC Quality awards, two Top 100 Pride in the Job awards and a Seal of Excellence.
Worst day at work?
Every day is a learning experience.
Favourite projects you have worked on?
Scholars Court, Cambridge and Church Fields, Long Stratton.
Best advice you’ve received?
Keep on learning and keep on smiling.
Favourite building?
Lincoln Cathedral. For the period of this building, the architecture is outstanding.
How do you unwind?
I like to spend time with my family, skiing, walking, and enjoying a good bottle of red wine.
Would you recommend construction to friends and family?
I would recommend the construction industry but it is very hard striving to get to the top.
And a topical question... Should we build new homes on the green belt?
It depends on the location, region within the country and the viability.
