Mark Lye is the new group supply chain director for Wates Group

How did you get into construction?

Construction runs in the family, so for me it was the natural option.

Biggest challenge new role presents?

Wates brought me in to overcome the traditional approach to supply chain management, and there will inevitably be some resistance to change.

What’s the most important factor in providing effective supply chain management?

You can’t create a ‘one size fits all’ approach with supply chain partners, just as you can’t have a ‘one size fits all’ approach with customers. Flexibility within a professional framework is the key.

Greatest influence in your professional life?

I joined Laing as a trainee, when their reputation was – rightly – second to none. My time there and the inspirational people I worked with set the course for my career.

Biggest professional achievement?

Gaining my postgraduate qualification at Loughborough Business Management School... or maybe achieving a procurement bonus at the £38m fit out of Minster Court.

Worst day at work?

Seeing the Minster Court fit out burn down – in particular the largest escalator bank in Europe – a day after finalising the warranty negotiations with a particularly awkward escalator sub-contractor.

Best advice you’ve received?

‘Remember who you upset on the way up, as you will meet them on the way down.’ In other words, treat everyone professionally and with respect.

Favourite building?

St Paul’s Cathedral, it’s a proper building rather than modern Meccano.

How do you unwind?

I enjoy a game of golf or mountain biking with my son.

Would you recommend construction to friends and families?

Absolutely. My 12-year-old son is already showing an interest in the built environment.

And one from leftfield… Chain stores or local retailers?

Both. I like to keep it flexible!
