Dan Hollas of Southwark council remembers a manager who taught him to think positively
What was the job?
I was housing officer for Southwark council; my boss, Antoinette Stasaitis, was neighbourhood manager.

What was the boss like?
She was new to her job and the authority as well – we started on the same day, in fact – so she had lots of enthusiasm with great interpersonal skills and this had a positive influence on her staff.

Was she scary?
I was really young at the time and busy enjoying my social life outside work. Occasionally I would turn up late, a bit worse for wear, and she always made a point of reminding me of my responsibilities to my colleagues and customers, which made me feel quite guilty. I'm glad to say I've grown up now.

Did she teach you anything important?
Always be positive about work and life in general – that's rubbed off on me. And she taught me not to let work problems get on top of you, always to keep them in perspective.

Would you treat your staff in the same way she treated you?
I'd like to think I learned a lot from her and took the best points away with me, but I'm a different person and do things my own way.

Occasionally I’d turn up late, a bit worse for wear, and she’d remind me of my responsibilities

Is there anything you'd like to say to her now?
You made me realise I had potential, but I had to believe in my abilities and grow up a bit.

The boss says:
"Dan was very knowledgeable about housing, very keen to assist other members of staff and very positive about his role as a housing manager. He played a lot of rugby.

"I do remember that he was late a couple of times but he always worked very hard and there was nothing for me to worry about.
