London Mayor Ken Livingstone has put energy efficiency at the forefront of his plans for the Capital with a review that will force developers to build greener, more sustainable homes.
Plans will require new housing schemes to connect to small power generation plants that generate up to 20% of their energy from renewable resources. Commercial developments will have to include their own power plants.
The plan also proposes statutory carbon emissions reduction targets for London, aiming at a 20% cut by 2015 and 60% by 2050.
British Property Federation director for regeneration and development Faraz Baber said: "The BPF supports any initiative to combat greenhouse gases. However, if no attention is paid to energy consumption by occupiers, then efforts to improve the energy efficiency of buildings will be made redundant."
