Winner
BDSP Partnership/MJN Colston 鈥 National Assembly for Wales
The team behind the National Assembly for Wales building had a tough brief. The building had to be an 鈥榚xemplar鈥 鈥 achieve BREEAM Excellent, have a design life of 100 years, use indigenous materials, minimise energy consumption as well as waste and apply renewable technologies where feasible.
The judges were impressed at the raft of sustainable measures that have been incorporated into such a complex building, which was completed both on time and within budget. These included extensive use of natural ventilation, ground source heat pumps, a biomass boiler and rainwater harvesting. The building acts as a benchmark of sustainable design, not only for public buildings but for commercial buildings of the future.
The judges also singled it out as 鈥渁n educational platform for the public鈥.
Runners-up
Cundall 鈥 The Gibbs 星空传媒
The Gibbs 星空传媒 is the new London headquarters for the Wellcome Trust, the world鈥檚 largest medical research charity. The BREEAM Excellent rated building is designed to create an open, light and airy workspace and has received a client satisfaction rating of nine out of 10. It incorporates a ventilated facade to help control solar gains and to provide an insulating buffer between the inside and outside.
DSSR 鈥 University College Hospital London
The location of this new 拢225 m PFI hospital on London鈥檚 Euston Road imposed stringent planning and logistical constraints on its design and construction, and the outward appearance belies its function. The highly serviced building includes 12 operating theatres as well as specialist ward accommodation within the complement of 680 beds.
Halcrow Yolles 鈥 Churchill Hospital
Halcrow Yolles is passionate about providing sustainable engineering solutions for real projects and they don鈥檛 come much more real than this 拢100 m cancer care centre for Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. Key to the development is a geothermal cooling and heating system that is 10 times larger than anything built in the UK to date and provides 2.9 MW of cooling and 2.2 MW of heating. The building has an estimated energy consumption of 36.8 GJ/100 m3, significantly lower than the 55 GJ/100 m鲁 target.
WSP 星空传媒s 鈥 RBS Gogarburn
The Royal Bank of Scotland鈥檚 global headquarters was completed three months ahead of schedule and on budget. Part of the success is put down to the on-site collocated offices between WSP 星空传媒s, the client and project partners. Based on these experiences, WSP co-authored a research project on collocation for CIRIA and participated in a BSRIA study into performance enhancement and productivity efficiency. The building received a BREEAM Excellent rating and achieves overall energy use figures substantially less than Econ 19 benchmarks.
