Thank you for Bishop David Walker鈥檚 cogent and lucid article on immigration control, which struck a chord with many of my own feelings about the subject.

I particularly appreciated his point about this country鈥檚 鈥渓ack of reciprocity鈥 in expecting foreigners to 鈥渄o things our way鈥.

I鈥檝e always been both amused and saddened by the expression 鈥済oing native鈥 鈥 a pejorative description of Britons abroad who commit the mortal sin of trying to absorb local culture.

And it hardly needs pointing out how, even now, so many British expats refuse to learn the language of their new country of residence.

There is still an arrogance in British culture that insists that the way we do things is always right 鈥 regardless of where in the world we happen to be.
