Operon's Manchester office has been appointed to work on the redevelopment of Harpurhey swimming baths in the north of the city, which includes the largest grant-funded photovoltaic installation in the UK.
The £8 million scheme has been designed by local architect Walker Simpson for client Manchester College of Arts and Technology. The building will house teaching facilities, a learning resource centre and restaurant. The City Council views this as a flagship project in the regeneration of North Manchester – an important goal in the reshaping of a city which has already undergone massive redevelopment.

Other passive and sustainable techniques used in the project will include active thermal water heating, rainwater harvesting, a sustainable urban drainage system and night time cooling. Construction will take place over three phases, with completion planned for 2006.
