The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has called for a wider range of housing options for the elderly.
The foundation this week recommended that ordinary homes be made more accessible in design, that extra support be provided to people so they can remain in private homes, and that action be taken to make it easier for income-poor, older people to move from home-ownership to rented housing.
Peter Fletcher, secretary of the task group, said many income-poor older people were deterred from giving up homes they owned because of stigma attached to renting in this age group.
But he thought mixed-tenure developments for older people could help.
鈥淲hy can鈥檛 we have a development of extra-care homes in which some flats are for sale, some for shared ownership and some for rent?鈥 he said.
