Ellen Bennett meets Darshan Singh Matharoo, Beth Johnson Housing Group's new director of housing and support services
Why this role?
I just fancied a change. My last job was assistant director of investment (policy) with the Housing Corporation but, after three-and-a-half years of doing policy and strategy development work, I wanted a job where I'd lead a service department and be responsible for policy/strategy development and service delivery to residents.

What's it like?
I'm at the leading edge of an organisation that is gearing up for expansion. Working in a changing environment is really exciting and challenging, there are so many opportunities. I like the fact that you can really make a difference to the quality of people's lives.

There's no such thing as an average day as yet because I've only been in this job six weeks. I deal with policy/strategy matters and operational/staffing issues, respond to correspondence and attend meetings with partners, stakeholders and tenants.

The biggest challenge is being able to deliver on tenants’ aspirations

What's the best bit?
Without doubt, it's the people: leading the housing and support services department, working with my staff and senior management on organisational restructuring and change management. We have a great team, which means we have been able to build really strong working relationships, both internally within the organisation and externally with tenants and residents.

How much money?
£65,000 a year.
