Judges felt that Atelier Ten had not only achieved international success for the organisation, but had also demonstrated a clear commitment to encouraging and supporting more sustainable building techniques in the USA. Atelier Ten established a permanent office in New York in 2001, forming Atelier Ten USA LLC in 2002. The NY office specialises in offering consultancy in innovative environmental and sustainable design. The consutlancy has also worked with the US Green Ðǿմ«Ã½ Council to help promote LEED – similar to the UK's BREEAM rating. The New York office has grown from a standing start to 15% of Atelier Ten's total turnover in just 12 months.

Battle McCarthy (Highly Commended)
The judges described this as a very close second, and made a difficult decision. Battle McCarthy has promoted sustainable building design in one of the toughest markets, the USA. American projects now account for 30% of the consultancy’s workload. For the National Institutes of Health, USA, Battle McCarthy created a sustainable development auditing mechanism which will be used to ensure the long term management of the site.

Ðǿմ«Ã½ Design Partnership
BDP’s work on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office building in Dar es Salaam exemplifies engineers dealing with a difficult climate while creating a secure building to European standards in one of the poorest countries in the world, Tanzania. The building is defended from harsh weather conditions by engineering techniques such as a solar concrete shell roof and brise soleil. It also makes use of local sea breezes to aid ventilation. Hot water is provided by roof mounted solar collectors. BDP modelled the concepts to ensure a comfortable environment for occupants.

FaberMaunsell
The National Gallery of Ireland was shortlisted for a RIBA Stirling Award for Ðǿմ«Ã½ of the Year. The FaberMaunsell engineers worked to provide a signature building which was also functional and wouldn’t be outdated in the next five years. High levels of co-operation between the team was key to success.

KT Engineering
The Astana Hospital in Kazakhstan faces temperatures as low as -30°C. KT Engineering not only had to work in such conditions, but also had to deal with resulting engineering issues such as 2 km of underground tunnels to carry out the building services of the hospital. Judges praised the commitment of the consultants to provide quality work in difficult conditions.

RMJM
RMJM has a global staff of around 500. The consultancy opened its first United Arab Emirates office in 1970, relocating to Dubai in 1979 with 33 years of successful operation in the UAE. Projects in Dubai have included HSBC’s Middle East Management headquarters, and the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.
