For the past few years the London Housing Federation has been openly supporting the proposals in the mayor's draft London plan, including the pan-London target for 50% of housing in all new developments to be affordable.

Our support for the plan has regularly been documented in Housing Today.

When recently contacted by a journalist writing an article on the London plan for Housing Today, (16 May, page 16) I continued to stress our support for the plan and talked about the need for there to be flexibility on a site-by-site basis to ensure the proposed London-wide target is achievable. I was rightly quoted as saying "there has to be flexibility or it [the London plan] won't work".

However, at no stage would I have talked about the mayor's stubbornness being a recipe for disaster. Your journalist must have confused my words with someone else's.

I see the mayor's insistence on the 50% target as the tool for delivering much needed additional affordable homes in London and support it all the way.
