The Trade and Industry select committee has criticised the government's lacklustre response to its report on the phasing out of retention clauses from public sector construction contracts by 2007.
Members of the committee questioned representatives of the DTi and the Office of Government Commerce on their stance over retentions at a July public hearing.
The committee received a government commitment to measure the use of retentions in public sector contracts, alongside that of the industry's progress towards zero defects by 2005; and to provide a list of all public sector bodies which have abandoned retentions along with their expenditure on construction procurement. SEC group representative Jerry Wallwork said: "I was encouraged that the government seemed to accept that retentions would come to an end at some point, and that the main question related to how and when we got there."
