I was interested to read your article on professional education in the issue of 27 May.

The quiz was of casual interest until I noticed that the answer published to question 8 appears to be wrong. I take it this was a deliberate mistake!

The length calculated as shown in your answer is in fact the length of the gable verge (3.46 m). The length of the hip rafter needs to be calculated as follows:

Length of hip on flat plain = square root of (3x3+3x3) which is 4.243 m; length of hip to pitch of 30° = 4.243 / cos 30, which is 4.90 m.

How many graduates will pick that one up? (I’m not one by the way, thank goodness.)
