Dear architects, engineers and surveyors, having spent a significant amount of time over the years being pestered by people selling advertising in various publications most recently the RIBA Education Sector Review I have finally lost it and this round robin is the result.
What caused this? Well after a lot of effort trying to understand the crediting of teams on the various projects potrayed in the ‘RIBA 100 best projects’ I find that consultants are not credited unless they pay to advertise. Why not and why do all the publications suffer from the same thing to various extents?
These credits should be automatic. How else can it considered to be fair and reasonable to work in design teams at risk, as all consultants do to a significant extent?
We all contribute to designs that enhance the reputation of all those involved. Without this automatic crediting it undermines the way all these professionals work together.
I find it is particularly aggravating in the case of schools where the environment, comfort and sustainability are arguably the most important topics in the design process right up there with the architectural planning.
I am sending this to representatives of the professional institutes and the magazines to try and promote debate and ultimately an agreed policy.
I think it would help if we could at least learn to work in teams at this level – as we aspire to do in real life. Your views would be welcome.
