Fire-related deaths fell to their lowest level since 1958 in the 12 months to 30 June 2005. The latest national fire statistics revealed the number of fire-related deaths during the year as 484, showing a continued downward trend. Over the same period the UK fire service attended 858 000 fires or false alarms.

The number of primary fires (involving property, vehicles and/or casualties) fell by 13% to 173 000, the lowest level since 1988. Secondary fires fell by a third to 233 000, due to a return to more seasonal weather conditions. The figures in the quarterly Fire Statistics Monitor are compiled from reports submitted to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
