Ray Bradley and Denise Basso formed Bradley Basso in 2004 with a shared vision of how glass can be used to create spatial concepts, particularly when used with architecture. Here we find out how they got to where they are today, and how they work together

Bradley Basso are artists and designers working primarily with glass in its relationship to architecture and the built environment.

Their main body of work and reputation is based on specially designed glass for a wide clientele and a large variety of buildings and interiors, both in this country and overseas.

The concept

Working in conjunction with other glass and mosaic specialists, their work usually involves a preoccupation with spatial concepts in relation to the transmission and quality of light, combining incisive design, multiple techniques and high quality craftsmanship.

Their work is mutually supportive whether developed independently or as a duo, and orchestrates the boundaries between exterior and interior, or variously defined areas within a building, by the interaction of transparency, translucency and reflection.

Creating focus or integration between glass art and design function, light sculpture and architecture, concept and ambience, whilst responding to context, place, space, its public and the total design aesthetic.

They pair are accustomed to working over a large variety of scale and within realistic budgets as integral to the design process and will provide guideline costs at an early stage, following a meeting or discussion and some site details for a proposed project.

Each project with its specific requirements is designed and developed for its individual setting and they emphasise the importance of working with the architects or the primary design team and the clients, as a major consideration in the production of their many successful glass installations.

Past works have included windows, doors, screens, canopies, suspended and self supported glass, for hotels, restaurants, clubs, music venues, schools, universities and religious buildings with some notable works for private residencies.

Common interests

Ray Bradley and Denise Basso formed their creative partnership in 2004 having established a close working relationship and recognised their common interests in the potential of glass to create ‘spatial concepts'.

The union combines long international experience supporting the dynamic of a new design and creative capability.

Denise Basso fulfilled her ambition to follow a creative career after business training and responsible positions in the textile and mosaic industries in Northern Italy.

Her transition was accomplished by part-time study in Venice followed by an Arts Foundation course in London, where she developed her initial interest in the potential of specialist glass for architecture. Subsequently she studied on a Degree Course at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, where glass was one of the specialist facilities and graduated with 1st Class Honours having also developed a creative empathy with her glass tutor.

Creative backgrounds

After returning to Italy and re-establishing her connections with Venetian mosaic production, as a potential extension to her glass repertoire, she then accepted an offer, working from both Italy and England, to form a creative partnership with her ‘ex-professor'.

Ray Bradley, a graduate of the former Stained Glass department at the Royal College of Art, established his own studio in West London and over the succeeding years has considerably extended his knowledge and approach to glass, working with it in different ways and in many situations. He has designed and produced commissioned works using glass in two and three-dimensional form, for public, private, religious and secular architectural spaces in England, Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East and Australasia. During the years 1993-2003 he was also visiting glass tutor for Design and Public Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London.
