Very little has been heard from the representatives of our industry or one of the Notified Body Test Houses regarding the new standards relating to toughened glass, writes Mike Gaillard of CEN Solutions Ltd
Although there is agreement as to the dates of implementation, there seems to be differing opinions as to the numbers of test samples needed to be submitted for the initial type test. As a consequence the prices charged can vary significantly.
Mike Gaillard states: ‘This situation has crept up on us almost unannounced. Both EN 12150 and EN 12600, the standards that will control future production of toughened glass, will be mandatory in September 2006 this year'.
In other words, under the rule of European Standards, manufacturers of safety glass will have to:
1. Have had their products tested to EN 12600 and EN 12150 by a notified body test house.
2. Have a factory production control (FPC) procedure in place with documentary evidence supporting this.
3. Be able to provide Technical File which includes data on all raw materials.
4. Have made a Declaration of Conformity.
Failure to be compliant could result in fines, prison sentences and even being forced to cease production.
There are three alternative methods of showing compliance that are available to manufacturers of toughened glass: Self declaration, Q Mark or Kitemark.
CEN Solutions Ltd has an FPC system (Quality Manual), suitable for all these methods, that clients can have adapted quickly and efficiently to suit their production procedures. These include all testing requirements and a unique proxy test to overcome the need for ongoing four point bend tests as defined in EN 12150-2. Testing to these standards can be arranged at any of the notified body test houses, though careful choice to get the best prices available could result in significant savings.
Mike Gaillard adds, ‘We feel that it is essential that manufacturers urgently make arrangements to implement these procedures and have their product tested, as there is limited time and test slots available.'
