Just as regular as the Chartered Institute of Housing's UK conference is the story the week before that seeks to knock the event ("Carry on conference" 13 June, page 38).
Many colleagues find the sessions and indeed the networking valuable. Of course there is a social aspect. But given the hard work put in throughout the year by the many committed people who work in housing, why should a little relaxation be ridiculed?
From my knowledge, members of the press also enjoy a little relaxation over a drink occasionally. And what's this in my post – an invitation to the Housing Today drinks reception with the opportunity to meet the team for a cocktail. No double standards there, then?
