You can obtain CSCS cards on the black market, as your columnist John Smith demonstrated (6 February, page 32). To obtain a CSCS card, you sit a health and safety test that most of the population could pass without preparation, fill out half a form and get your employer (or someone) to complete the other half, and that’s it, the card is on its way.

One of the problems the industry has is that anyone can set up as a builder and accredit their workers. Don’t get me wrong: if the CSCS scheme saves one life it will be worthwhile. However, the it is being organised is like putting an elastoplast on the Titanic.
