Durham County Council
This council has produced a guide to help the North East region move towards a more sustainable future. Produced by Durham County Council with its regional partners, Ðǿմ«Ã½ in Sustainability: A guide to sustainable construction and development in the North East, is a 130 page document covering issues such as reusing buildings and land, designing for minimum waste, giving people transport choices and making a commitment to sustainable regeneration. The judges liked this holistic approach and the way that the council had used real background data to produce an effective guide. They commented that it is "practical, useful and proved that a council could deliver sustainability beyond its own building stock".
Runners up
BAAJudges felt that BAA had demonstrated a strong commitment to partnering and working with their contractors and suppliers as a real team. Their projects have included working with manufacturers to design and produce prefabricated equipment which not only reduced the costs of the products themselves, but also enhanced quality and increased health and safety on site.
Development Securities
DevSecs is the developer behind the Paddington Central scheme. Judges praised the way in which partnering methods have been used to ensure a smooth-running project. This involved early collaboration of main contractor, m&e contractor and consultants.
Manchester City Council
Manchester is one of the landmark examples of regeneration of a city. The council has not only overseen many of the UK’s most outstanding building projects, but has also shown that it is possible to win local support of residents. The City of Manchester Stadium was an excellent example of a well managed project.
Kevin Thomas, GlaxoSmithKline
In nominating Kevin Thomas, we recognise the work of this individual to support the principles of better supply chain management and the ideals of better working relationships in construction projects. Not only has Kevin worked hard within his own large organisation to bring these ideas to fruition, he has also been a visible presence at conferences and seminars, willing to share his experience and knowledge with a wider audience.
Woking Borough Council
Woking Borough Council took a £250 000 government grant and turned it into £2.7 million by making it the most energy efficient borough in the UK. Between 1990 and 2000, Woking saved a total of 36% energy, and cut its carbon emissions by 66%. The move also slashed the Council’s energy costs by £4.7 million.
