The event, which saw the culprit tow away a Rover saloon parked at the site, was captured on a CCTV system managed by SSS, which undertakes remote monitoring at a number of B&Q sites throughout the UK.
The images were transmitted to the police, leading to the immediate identification and arrest of the suspect, who also admitted stealing six vehicles from a local car dealership.
SSS managing director Terry Baker commented: "This is a perfect illustration of how good procedures and practices can ensure fully effective security at a site, satisfying both our client and the criminal justice agencies.
"It demonstrates that the systems we have in place are able to meet ACPO's increased demand for verifying incidents such as this before advising the police to attend." SSS oversees more than 5,000 premises throughout the UK.
The youth was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders institution.
