David Walker states "Barking & Dagenham is not keen to build any more social housing in the borough"(27 June, page 30). Clearly he has been grossly misinformed.
Barking & Dagenham's Housing Strategy 2003–2006 sets a 35% affordable housing target for new development, in line with the London mayor's Draft London Plan.
There will be negotiated 25% targets for strategic sites but to mitigate this we will deliver 50% affordable homes on several other sites across the borough.
Our housing strategy is one of the few to be awarded fit-for-purpose status. Here in Barking & Dagenham we believe in, and are striving to create, sustainable communities. This means creating high-quality homes of all tenures.
