David Marks and Julia Barfield win contract for UK’s tallest observation tower in Brighton

London Eye architects, David Marks and Julia Barfield and the West Pier Trust have submitted a planning application for Brighton i360, the UK’s tallest observation tower. Approximately 20% of the energy required to operate the pod will come from silent wind turbines at the top of the spire.

Julia Barfield said: “Brighton i360 will enable people to see the whole city and it will be a dramatic addition to Brighton’s skyline. We hope that it will become a 21st Century symbol for Brighton, as the London Eye was for London.â€

Positioned at the beach end of the damaged Grade 1 listed West Pier, Brighton i360 has the full support of the West Pier Trust. The new building will provide an income stream for the Trust to finance its heritage retention works and decide on the future of the pier.

Brighton was chosen mainly because of its huge tourist economy with something around 8 million people visiting the seaside resort every year.

Brighton i360 will be operated by I-Xperience. It’s anticipated that the building will create 109 new full-time jobs, boost tourist revenue up to £10m, and act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area.

I-Xperience managing director, Eleanor Harris said: “We expect Brighton i360 to attract around 550,000 visitors annually, 20% first time visitors to Brighton and become Brighton’s biggest paid for visitors attraction. Our vision is to create the best visitor experience in the UK. We also hope to become the most unique venue for weddings and civil partnership.â€
