Corporation made 300 variations on west London project, according to new report
The BBC has been accused of poor management of its construction projects that led to a 29% increase on its new White City building.
A report issued this morning by the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee claimed that the BBC added £60m to the cost of the building, which was originally priced at £210m. The overspend was on additional requirements such as furniture and the technical fit-out.
The report called for the BBC to integrate design and construction more closely as 300 variations were made on the west London scheme, built by contractor Bovis Lend Lease. "Introducing variations after deals have been signed inevitably heightens the risk of cost increases," the report said.
Three firms have been shortlisted by the BBC to oversee the facilities management of the corporation's buildings in London and Scotland. The three are: Carillion; Haden Ðǿմ«Ã½ Management; and Johnson Controls.
