Consultant Arup has launched a 拢3000 competition to come up with a device to produce safe drinking water. According to Arup, one sixth of the world鈥檚 population does not have access to safe water and two fifths live without adequate sanitation.

The Drawing Water Challenge is aimed at designers and inventors to 鈥渄evise a means of, or product to improve the lives of people without access to clean water鈥�.

Designers are invited to submit proposals that are:

  • a new concept
  • a new technology
  • a new product
  • an innovative approach.
Judges include Ken Shuttleworth of Make architects, Sir Christopher Frayling of the RCA, consulting engineers David Glover and Jo da-Silva of Arup, Marcus Fairs of Icon magazine and WaterAid directors.

In addition to the 拢3000 first prize, there is a 拢2000 second prize and a 拢1000 third prize. All prize money will be donated by Arup. The deadline for entries is 31 January 2007.
