Mohamed Iitaf (formerly Richard) Sheikh, the chairman and chief executive of Bromley-based insurance brokerage Camberford Law, is the first Muslim to be nominated for a peerage by the Conservative Party. A Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, Mohamed is an active participant in three Livery companies and also a Freeman of the City of London.

The General Purpose Committee of the Central Executive Council of the GMB Trade Union has declared that Paul Kenny has been elected (unopposed) as the Union's general secretary and treasurer. 56-year-old Kenny has been acting general secretary since March 2005, during which time national membership has risen by 4,000.
