Mowlem chief executive John Gains has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Trained as a civil engineer, Gains has spent his entire career with the firm. He has recently stepped down as president of the Construction Confederation.
Sir Martin Laing, non-executive director at John Laing, has been appointed to a board at PricewaterhouseCoopers, advising firms on mergers and aquisitions. Sir Martin was head of Laing when it sold its construction division for £1 to O'Rourke in 2001.
Bluestone has appointed Chris Trafford (right) as area director, based in Bristol. Chris, 49, joins the company from Skanska where he was construction director. In his new role he will have responsibility for construction activities across Bristol and Cardiff, including projects such as a £3.1 million scheme to extend a cold storage facility for Frigoscandia Limited in the Bristol area.
Hugh Try, deputy chairman of Galliford Try, has been appointed an Investors in People Ambassador. He becomes the fourth ambassador in the construction sector along with Keith Aldis of ECITB, Dawn Davis of Antony A Davis, and Chris McEwan, MD of Tendring Construction.
Kier has appointed Robert Gregory to its main board. He will be responsible for the group's housebuilding division.
Office fit-out specialist Overbury has appointed 30-year old Rachel Bates (left) as business development manager, based in Bracknell. In her new role Rachel, who joins the company from Muraspec Marine, will have responsibility for the development of new business opportunities for Overbury's southern division.
Parting company
Robert Hawley has retired as chairman of Taylor Woodrow. Deputy chairman Norman Broadhurst is taking over the role temporarily.
Derek Sack has quit as a non-executive director of housebuilder Berkeley.
