Ancient and modern: Swathes of pre-1919 terraced houses in the North-west could be saved from demolition after a successful pilot scheme in Preston transformed four of them into trendy apartments.

The homes were refurbished by Adactus Housing Group and are offered for rent and shared ownership.

Now the group, which includes County Palatine and Family (Manchester) housing associations, expects to convert around 25 homes a year, in association with Preston, Wigan and Manchester councils. Chief executive Paul Lees said: 鈥淚 can really see this taking off across the country.鈥
