Five key agencies have joined together to make an unprecedented statement on how to make housing market renewal a success.
The statement from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, English Heritage, the Commission for Integrated Transport, the Environment Agency and the Sustainable Development Commission suggests strategies for market renewal, including:
  • enhance historic buildings in an area to make it distinct and vibrant
  • value older urban areas – no matter how poor – as they offer networks of settlements that can become high value areas
  • put good design at the centre of regeneration
  • work towards sustainable lifestyles and energy-efficient homes
  • regeneration organisations must make early benchmarks for quality.

Sir Neil Cossons, chairman of English Heritage, said: "The historic character of many of these places is highly valued by local communities and can be used positively to stimulate housing market renewal."
