I have just read your 21 November issue, and I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed your piece on tenant activists ("Real-life heroines", page 37). Having grown up on a housing association estate where my elderly father was the constant victim of nuisance behaviour, it was refreshing to see the efforts of these brave women to bring a sense of community back to their troubled estates.

Your writer very skilfully painted a picture of the downward spiral that young people in such areas get caught in. A life without hope is not really a life at all: hopefully, the example of strong, brave women like Julie Fawcett will show those with eyes to see that there is hope for a different kind of life.
