A housing association chief executive earned 拢213,000 last year 鈥� thought to be the highest salary ever paid to a public sector worker.
The hefty pay packet was taken home by David Bennett, managing director of Worcester-based Sanctuary Housing Group. That's more than three times the national median wage for housing association chief executives, which is 拢67,698 (HT 28 March, page 26).

Bennett's basic pay was 拢136,000 but he also got a one-off relocation payment of 拢65,000 and other benefits worth 拢12,000.

He declined to comment.

Sanctuary is the third largest registered social landlord in England.

Bennett is in charge of 1707 staff and managed a turnover of 拢132m last year.

Craig Moule, Sanctuary's director of finance, said: "Moving [from Hertford to] Worcester will bring down our costs and will help us realise considerable savings in less than three years."

The chief executive of another large housing association, who did not wished to be named, said: "That is way out of step with the sector norms and it's also out of step with any other sector we might want to compare ourselves with."
