Council and police officers tackled more than 100,000 reported cases of antisocial behaviour last year, according to Home Office figures.

The figures for England and Wales (right) were revealed last week to coincide with an announcement that the number of target areas where councils and courts clamp down on antisocial behaviour is to be increased (HT 29 October, page 7).

The Home Office reached its total by extrapolating from figures from two thirds of all crime and disorder reduction partnerships.

Between 1 October 2003 and 30 September 2004, these 239 partnerships were estimated to have been responsible for 5400 acceptable behaviour contracts, 2600 antisocial behaviour orders, 400 dispersal orders and 150 crack house closure orders.

Tim Winter, national organiser of the Social Landlords鈥� Crime and Nuisance Group, said he was 鈥減leased ASBOs are now used more widely鈥�.
