The Housing Corporation has teamed up with PRP Architects to introduce off-the-shelf designs for the social housing sector, in a new bid to make off-site manufactured homes cheaper.
Peter Phippen, founding partner and former chairman of PRP, has drawn up the new specifications.

He said: "OSM just doesn't seem to be making any headway. What's needed is repetition – to make a manufacturing process affordable you need repetition."

He says the designs will offer this without leading to identikit housing.

If the Housing Corporation-backed plans are adopted by the industry, Phippen claims many housing components will be standardised.

From April, a quarter of the corporation's development funding must be used to build OSM homes.
